World famous seaside town north of Agios Nikolaos in the prefecture of Lasithi known for its beautiful beaches, the crystal clear sea and the luxurious hotels preferred by famous worldwide personalities.
The stunning beaches with golden sand are awarded every year with a blue flag, of which the most popular are the beach of Agia Marina, the municipal organized beach next to the harbor and the beach of Kolokitha.
Of particular interest are the old salt mines of Elounda, quite famous during the Venetian domination. Nowadays, many species of birds live in this area and some of them are rare as the flamingos. There are also frequent boat trips from Elounda to the island of Spinalonga, where in the old days, the lepers of Crete were being gathered by the authorities to prevent the spread of the disease.
